Mr. Ralph Stubbs Obituary

God in his most gentle way opened the Book of Life on August 18, 2016 and saw that his beloved Ralph Glenn Stubbs completed his earthly life. He peacefully reached down with His mighty hand and whispered, 'Peace be thine,' and lifted Ralph from this earthly life into Paradise with the Lord, where Ralph now has eternal rest. Ralph Glenn Stubbs was the youngest and only survivor of ten children born to the late Richard Allen Stubbs, Sr. and Lillie Bell Drake Stubbs on February 21, 1932 in Red Springs, North Carolina. He was also raised in Red Springs and confessed Christ at an early age uniting with St. James A.M.E. Zion Church. Throughout his life, he was a faithful member and held many positions in the church culminating in his appointment as the Pastor's Steward which he held until his health started to fail. Ralph was educated in the elementary and high schools of Robeson County. After graduation from Peterson High School in Red Springs, he entered Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina but interrupted his studies to enlist as a Medic in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and later returned to Livingstone College to continue his pursuit of a Bachelor degree in Biology. He enjoyed all that campus life had to offer by playing basketball and becoming a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. While there he married the former Helen Gist (deceased), a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and they were blessed with a daughter, Laura. He later married Minnie Monroe, the love of his life, also of Red Springs, North Carolina, a union of almost fifty years until his passing. Ralph specialized in X-Ray technology while serving in the Army. Upon leaving active duty, he moved to Washington, DC and made a suggestion for making the use of the X-Ray Machine easier while serving as a civilian X-Ray technician at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC (now Walter Reed Medical Center, Bethesda, MD). As a result of his suggestion, he received an award. He eventually returned to Red Springs, NC where he held a variety of positions and continued to use his medical skills. His skills served him well as he was able to care for his brother-in-law, the late John (June) Monroe, Jr. When his own health started to decline, his beloved niece and nephew, Lisa Stubbs Floyd and Ronald (Ronnie) Monroe, respectfully, initially provided care to him until he was placed in the assisted living facility. After he entered assisted living, Ronnie was his primary caregiver. Ralph had a deep love of family and over the years, as his siblings passed away, he became the family patriarch, a role he cherished. He could be depended on to give sage advice and mentor the younger generation as well as open his pool to the family members and friends for quality play time. He loved to travel and frequently took took numerous long-distance road trips, at a moment's notice to visit and check on the well-being of his aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins and friends. He enjoyed good food, fellowship and closely following all manner of North Carolina sports teams which sometimes led to high spirited conversations. Ralph leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Mrs. Minnie Monroe Stubbs; a daughter, Dr. Laura Stubbs of Arlington, VA; three sister-in-laws, Mrs. Hazel Stubbs of Fayetteville, NC; Mrs. Sallie Fisher and Mrs. Bernice Collins both of Philadelphia, PA; four brother-in-laws Mr. Carl Monroe of Houston, TX; Mr. Clifton Harrington of Fayetteville, NC; Mr. James C. Gist, Jr. of Orlando, FL; Mr. William Gist, Sr. of Philadelphia, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He will be sorely missed.
