Duncan McFadyen, III Obituary

Duncan Brown McFadyen, III, 64, of Raeford, North Carolina died Friday, November 2, 2012 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was born April 20, 1948 in Lumberton, North Carolina to Duncan Brown McFadyen, Jr. and wife, Harriet Hodgin McFadyen of Hoke County, who predeceased him. He graduated from Hoke County High School, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in 1970, and a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973. He began his professional legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Cumberland and Hoke County and served in that capacity from 1973 to 1976. He joined the law firm of the late R. Palmer Willcox in 1976 where he quickly made partner. He became the senior partner in 1998 and served in that capacity until 2012 in the law firm now known as Willcox, McFadyen, Fields and Sutherland. He served as Bar Councilor for Judicial District 16A from 2001 to 2007 and County Attorney for Hoke County from 1979 to 1993. He was held in the highest esteem by his partners, colleagues and members of the court system. Mr. McFadyen was a lifelong member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and then Elder. Mr. McFadyen was an avid reader of history and great literature, an excellent storyteller, and loyal friend to many who will miss his boundless charm and good cheer. The local paper ran a story in 1976 describing him as Raefords most eligible bachelor, and he remained so until his passing. He faced all of lifes challenges, including the last, with his well-known gentlemanly poise and dignity. He is survived by his brothers, George Hodgin McFadyen and his wife, Anne of Pinetops, North Carolina, and James Laurence McFadyen and his wife, Susan of Thomson, Georgia; four nieces and nephews, James Scott McFadyen and John Robert McFadyen and his wife, Claire of Tarboro, North Carolina; Martha McFadyen Scott and husband, Winfield of Louisville, Georgia, and Mary Kathryn McFadyen Land and husband, Jared of Thomson, Georgia, aunts Frances McFadyen McCreery and husband, Robert of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Louise B. McFadyen of Red Springs, North Carolina and a special aunt and a dear lifelong friend Willa McFadyen Lindsay of Southern Pines, North Carolina, and many cousins. He was a loving brother and uncle. The family would like to express their gratitude for the many displays of grace from the community. Arrangements have been made by Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Raeford Cemetery on Monday, November 5th. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Raeford Presbyterian Church with Reverend Michael McGehee and the Reverend James Braden officiating. The family will be available for visitation following the memorial service Monday, November 5th at the Raeford Presbyterian Church-John Ropp Fellowship Hall.
