John Ira Markle

John Ira Markle son of the late Beatrice and Ferdinand Markle was born in Orange County California, passed away Thursday, 14 October 2021 at the age of 53. John is preceded in death by his son, Thadius Ian Markle.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Daniels Markle, his stepdaughter, Brandy Rowe, god-daughter April Gribble (formerly April Coyle), his sister Debbie Ackerson, and brothers, William Markle, and Jeffrey Markle.

John worked at USASOC Inspector General as a D.O.D Civilian Assistant I.G. and retired after 23 years and 7 months with the US Army. He worked as a 42A Human Resources Specialist and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Fifth Award), Army Accommodation Medal (Fourth Award), Army Achievement Medal (Fifth Award), Good Conduct Medal (Seventh Award), National Defense Service Medal (Second Award), Southwest Asia Service Medal (with 3 Bronze Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NATO Medal, Afghanistan Medal with Campaign Star, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Master Parachutist Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge, and Drill Sergeant Identification Badge. 

He loved to cook for his wife and was very family oriented.  He cared for them deeply including their dog Sallie Mae who he affectionately called Momma. Their favorite past time was snuggling and napping on the couch together. John was, what his family and friends called “butterflyin”.  He would always strike up a conversation with people he didn’t know or somebody would come up to him and just start talking to him.  Most of the conversations started over his concert T-shirts which he always wore.  

The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.

Visitation 6-8pm Friday October 22, 2021, at Crumpler Funeral Home Raeford, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford, NC.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 pm Saturday, October 23 at Bethesda Presbyterian Cemetery.
